Levels of Mental Health Treatment

At Agape, our inpatient program provides a structured therapeutic environment where clients can dedicate themselves to stabilization and recovery completely free from the distractions and stressors of everyday life. Each day in the inpatient program is structured with evidence-based clinical programming such as individual therapy, group therapy, psychoeducation, and medication management. Clinical staff members collaborate with the psychiatric team to assess and modify client treatment plans on a continuous basis.

Inpatient treatment is not merely a holding place, but rather an active component of the recovery process. All aspects of the program have been designed to prepare clients for transition into the next phase of their treatment plan, whether that is a partial hospitalization program or another form of treatment. Discharge planning begins early, ensuring that transitions are thoughtful, coordinated, and supported.

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) delivers extensive structured clinical programming during the day while providing clients with opportunities to return home or to a supportive living environment during the evening. A partial hospitalization program is one of the most comprehensive forms of care available outside of residential settings and is appropriate for clients who require a considerable amount of therapeutic services but do not need 24-hour supervision.

PHP at Agape involves several hours of programming per day, five days per week. Programming may involve individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy when appropriate, medication monitoring, and psychoeducational sessions addressing the awareness and coping techniques essential for ongoing recovery. The objective is to deliver the intensity provided by inpatient programs within a structure that begins introducing clients to real-world rhythms and responsibilities.

Many people use PHPs as either a transitional step-down from inpatient psychiatric care or a transitional step-up from intensive outpatient service when symptoms intensify. PHP is especially useful for individuals dealing with mood disorders, traumatic experiences, anxiety, depression, and co-occurring disorders that require more than what weekly therapy sessions can deliver, but who are stable enough to benefit from some degree of independence.[1]

Mental health recovery rarely occurs in isolation, and the people closest to someone in treatment are often significantly impacted by their loved one’s struggles. To recognize this and to support families throughout the recovery process, our Family Support Program provides the education, training, and clinical support needed to allow families to contribute positively to the recovery process.

Through the Family Support Program at Agape, families participate in formally scheduled family therapy sessions, learn about mental health conditions and treatment, and receive direct assistance to address their own emotional responses to their loved one’s illness. Our clinical team helps families to develop effective communication patterns, establish healthy boundaries, and create an environment that reinforces the knowledge and skills learned during treatment. When properly implemented and clinically guided, studies show that family involvement significantly increases successful treatment outcomes.[3] We firmly believe that healing as a family benefits all members of that system, and we are committed to making that support possible.

How The Right Level of Care is Determined

The material published on this webpage has been written and reviewed in accordance with the editorial policies at Agape Detox Center. At Agape, we determine a client’s level of care at the start of treatment through a comprehensive evaluation conducted by our admissions and clinical team. This assessment evaluates the nature and severity of the client’s mental health symptoms, their past experience with mental health treatment, whether or not there is a co-occurring mental health condition or substance abuse, their current living situation, available support system, and any potential safety concerns that could affect the appropriate setting for care.

We use established standards and guidelines for making decisions about how much support is needed, but we also apply our professional judgment and the specific goals and personal circumstances of each client. Ultimately, the “right” level of care is the level that provides enough structure and support for clients to make meaningful, sustainable growth and development without being more restrictive than necessary. As clients progress through their treatment plans, their level of care is evaluated and revised as needed to ensure they continue receiving just the right amount of support for where they are in their recovery.
